Martin Short
Martin Hayter Short was born in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, on March 26, 1950. Charles’ father, a senior executive with Stelco, was Olive’s mother, the concertmaster of the Hamilton Symphony Orchestra. David, Brian, Michael, and Nora, Short’s four older siblings, grew up in a Catholic household. When Martin was 12 years old, David was killed in a car accident, and Olive died of cancer in 1968, two years before Charles died of a stroke.
Education
He completed his secondary education at Westdale Secondary School and earned a bachelor’s degree degree degree, a doctorate in literature from McMaster University in 2001. He decided that acting was his career path following his casting in “Godspell” in 1972 with Gilda Radner, Eugene Levy, and Andrea Martin (his future sister-in-law).
Personal Life
During a 1972 production of “Godspell,” Martin met Gilda Radnor, and the two got engaged in 1974. In 1980, Martin and Nancy Dolman married. In 1983, Katherine and Oliver adopted a son and, in 1986, a daughter; in 1989, Henry. As of January 2020, Marty became a grandfather for the first time. Sadly, Nancy passed away in August 2010 due to ovarian cancer.
Career
After years of television work, Short made his big-screen debut in 1979 with “Lost and Found.” He starred alongside Steve Martin and Chevy Chase in 1986’s “Three Amigos.” He appeared in several other movies during the 1980s, including “Innerspace” (1987), “Cross My Heart” (1987), “Three Fugitives” (1989), and “The Big Picture” (1989). Among his film credits are “Jiminy Glick in Lalawood” (2004) and “The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause” (2006), and he has provided the voice of many animated films, including “The Prince of Egypt” (1998), “Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted” (2012), and “The Addams Family” (2019).
He earned his first Tony nomination for his Broadway performance of Neil Simon’s “The Goodbye Girl” in 1993. As a Tony Award winner for “Little Me” in 1999, and in 2003 as Leo Bloom in a Los Angeles production of “The Producers,” he performed “Martin Short: Fame Becomes Me” on Broadway from August 2006 to January 2007. In 2015, he starred in the same theatre as James Wicker in “It’s Only a Play.”
